New rig help
New rig help -- 11-14-2010, 03:02 PM
Post: #1
So I’m thinking it’s about to build my own rig it might take a few months to collect all the essentials and such but before I do I want some input.

So let’s see budget maybe about 1,000 if I can get around the fiancée lol. I want something that can run all the games out to date plus room for improvement.

I want a great power supply and motherboard something I don’t need to worry about failing me some great vid card/s if I can slack in some things like sound cards I can do that until I can get better but I do want some of the best stuff out there.

WD Caviar Green yuck.

That's a 5400rpm drive... go with either a Caviar Black if you want WD, OR (and i would highly recommend this) a Samsung Spinpoint F3, they're the fastest 7.2k drive out atm and they're cheaper than the WD's

Alright I'll spec something out on the egg...

I guess you need keyboard/headset/mouse/monitor/Operating System?

Here we are:

Case & PSU - CM Storm Scout w/ CM 700W PSU - $150 (yes, I know it's not great to buy PSU with the case, but CM PSU's aren't bad so it'll mean better GPU/CPU)

CPU - AMD Phenom II x4 955 - $155

Mobo - Gigabyte 890FX UD5 - $175

RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 1600MHz CL8 - $85

GPU - EVGA 01G-P3-1371-AR GTX460 - $220

HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - $100 (WUT. It's $57 over here :o)

Total so far - $890

Optical Drive - whatever, preferably BenQ or LiteOn - ~$45 Make sure it is SATA and not OEM

Keyboard - MS Sidewinder x4 - $53 (again, it's $45 over here, I thought the egg was meant to be really cheap)

Mouse - Razer Deathadder V2 - $50 Make sure you get a mousepad for it, optical needs one in most cases. A cheap one will do fine Smile

OS - Win7 Home 64-bit OEM - $100

Monitor - Samsung 24" BX2431 LED - $250

I think that's everything, it comes to $1340, enjoy Smile

I didn’t add in a mouse monitor and windows because I can always upgrade that stuff in time. I might kick my lappy back to vista so I can use my windows disks on it saving 100 bucks.

Also I’m thinking I might go water cooled I’m not 100% yet but I think I’ll give it a try. Not sure if ill budge on the case because it will last me a long time and has room for all the stuff I want in the future.

Now I have a list for Intel parts and AMD parts what is the general census?

Ok, firstly, that's a good idea, is it win7 64bit?

Are you going to overclock, and overclock over 4GHz? If not, I wouldn't even bother with anything other than stock cooling. Be aware that a good WC loop can be $400 on it's own, if not more, and it's time consuming to properly set up.

The CM Storm Scout is a really nice case, but if you want the HAF X, get the HAF X, case is mostly personal preference - there are some basic guidelines, but the HAF X is a very good case. It IS massive, so make sure you have room for it. People think my Storm Scout is big and it's tiny in case terms.

Well in your case I'd go AMD, you can go with other things. For instance, I've thrown in a monitor, mouse, keyboard and OS for less than your i7 build, and you'll get pretty much the exact same gaming performance.

The only real reason to get an i7 over an AMD chip is if you are doing lots of heavy rendering work, because the hyperthreading really helps with that. If it's a purely gaming and household PC, then AMD is fine.

How about this AMD setup It costs a bit more than the one Entice posted but cheaper than my first Intel set up or any setup I found with Intel I like.

It features a cheaper HD, cheaper memory, a better CPU, and a better Vid card and its only about 100 bucks more expensive than the one Entice and I worked out together.
