xbox 360 disk drive questions was created by [BBF]DrDeath

Calling all my good xbox friends:

A good friend of mine has an original xbox 360 that he thinks the disk drive is bad. We were look on youtube and I think I can replace it for him. He thinks it is bad because it will start a game but when he goes to multiplayer on the game not online it will freeze up.

So what kind of drive does he need to buy? I have seen there are 3 different types of drives.

Where to get it?

Is this the problem and will this fix it?

First of all do not open it if its still under warranty. Thats a big no no.! Second, it might be because the lens is dusty. Try blowing compressed air inside tue disk tray. It also might not even be the disk drive at all. Perhaps the disk is scratched. Idk, make sure the warranty is still good Before you tinker with it.. learned that the hard way.
Also, which xbox version is it.?

Have you tried turning it on and back off again?

In seriousness, if it is dusty, you might want to keep it out of a cabinet or a bookshelf. I had mine like that and it would constantly overheat. Some dust could have gotten into it.

Every time I went over to bobarian's house I would keep telling him to take his Xbox out to blow air into it. Sure enough once it finally hit him he did as I said and keeps it in an airy place. I've been telling him for years.. lol

It is out of warranty way out

Disk plays fine elsewhere

Not sure about dust thing

Old one it is a white one

There should be a Microsoft sticker behind the faceplate. Peel that off and crack it open. I think there should be a way to open the metal part covering the disk drive. I haven't opened an Xbox in a while so forgive me if I get something wrong.
