If the Pats go all the way, I'll be extremely surprised. It's possible, but they're on the outside looking in, imo.
Reasoning?
-- Lack of defensive secondary. Absolute lack. Arrington might have a share of the INT lead, but that's because he gets more balls thrown at him than (can't put that joke here without violating the clan charter). McCourty really isn't looking like he's a good DBack this year - and while he has had to cover the #1 receivers all the time.. he's just seemed really slow and not quite on the play like he was last year. Perhaps they were too quick cutting all the DBs they did.. no matter how big of an idiot Meriweather proved to be.
-- Lack of defensive playmakers. Ninkovich and Carter could be on to something - but they'll have to be more productive on a regular basis. At the best they could be Seymour and Vrabel. At present - they've got a ways to go. Mayo, Wilfork and others do a good job of plugging up the middle - but really opposing players have had too much space to deal with.
-- Where's Woodhead? I know it sounds funny to make a big stink about Danny Woodhead - but they need that scat-back who can really come up with those unexplainable 8-10 yard runs.. especially given his liability when it comes to picking up the blitz. The question then comes down to Kevin Faulk - CAN BE PLAY? If he can get up to health and speed.. and be the Faulk of old.. we might have something there.
-- Reliance on the Tight Ends. We need receivers to make plays to get those TEs some breathing room. I'm not talking about Welker (slot-stud) - but I'm talking about Branch/Ochocinco. Those guys need to be making better plays and quicker to allow Brady to continue to exploit the TE-tandem.
So it's possible.. but a lot of things have to go right =(

Aw man, you had to bring up their defense... :P
True, their defense is the worse in the NFL and it's due to many reasons, but I really agree that their lack of defensive play makers hurts the team overall; they get stomped on so bad during plays and it just infuriates me.
Well, atleast they stomped Kansas City last night,
But sadly, I feel Green Bay may take it this year again. *Le Sigh...
