Anyone know about Vizslas ? was created by Pacos Old Posts

We are looking into getting a dog eventually. Not sure how soon at this point, but I do like what I have read about Vizslas so far. I'm not a hunter, but they are also great family dogs from what I have read.

Anyone have experience with them?

Well, I like both, but Vizslas are medium sized dogs. I had a german shepard when I was young, and I've had a cocker spaniel as well.

We want a good family dog that can also go on jogs with us, is trainable, has a good temperment, and doesn't shed too bad.

I loved my old Mini Schnauzer. She was the greatest. Great indoor, house, lap dog. Very protective, didn't shed at all. Didn't like really young kids much though.

Still considering a Vizsla. Applied for a couple lists from reputable breeders.

We did check out the adoptable mutts at local shelters a few times. Walked a retriever/hound mix that was 1 year old...but it seemed like he was ready to go off on his own with every smell. Weighed as much as my daughter too, so I didn't see her enjoying such as big dog. Don't want a chihuahua or yappy dog either.

I am determined to own a Miniature Schnauzer before I die, but probably not right now. It would work for what me and my daughter want from a dog, but not for my wife. She wants a dog that will run.

We looked at some Golden Retriever puppies and their mother...but they have long hair and shed a fair amount. Good 'fun loving' dogs though...ready to greet anyone and play.

FWIW... as for rescue dogs.. we had a Shih-Tzu/Havanese that we got from a backyard breeder - after a year we wanted to get her a playmate.

We used some online site like findapet or something like that.. 90% of what was there were breeders masking themselves as rescues. We put in a lot of inquiries to various people about the dogs they had, some were quick to respond and sell us puppies, some were slow to respond, etc. The general "fee" for a dog was from $250-500 per dog (or puppies which could go for even more... breeders...grr.)

Eventually we got in contact with a Rescue down in Maryland (about 400 miles away) about a pair of Shih-tzu/Pekingese pups that had been taken from an abusive elderly couple. We had offered to take the pair, they said they would let us know after they got a look at them.

The lady worked with a friend who was a manager of a local hotel in MD and set us up with a free night. So we drove down there, pups unseen, 8 hours. Crashed in the hotel and in the morning met the lady from the Rescue at her office, filled out some paperwork. She said we'd only be taking one as there was some serious competition for attention so she felt they were better off split up (fine, one dog instead of two). We then drove to the Vet where she'd had their nails cut and neutering done.

Dog comes out of surgery, we put him in the car and begin the drive back home. She asked for $150, we gave her $200.

This dog had been abused. Picked up by the ears and beaten during house-training. Neglected and left in a backyard kennel most of the time, etc.

Immediately he was a pretty good pup - and now you'd never know he was ever abused.

TL;DR version :: Any puppy is going to be as good as his owner's efforts make him.

Yeah, my wife really would like to rescue a dog, but I would much rather get a dog we know something about (meet the parents of the dog, know their temperment, know their health history, pedigree, etc.). Inbreeding can be bad, and purebreeding I know can cause health problems, but at least you know the potential health problems when there is a history.

The Visla's are somewhat more rare than other purebred dogs so not as many choices for breeders. However, the breeders I've found so far seem to really put the time in to do things right (as much as I can tell not being a breeder myself).

I think some of the big problems come when breeders are in it for the money and/or to have 'quality show dogs'. Sure, I'd like to have a nice looking dog...but I'm not out to take the dog to dog shows, and find it quite sad people do this.

Now something like hunting or dock jumping would be cool...
