Windows 7 System Image Utility (Pretty Solid!) was created by [BBF] Akkim

So.. tried something for the first time tonight.. using Windows to create a System Image and Restore an Image to swap out my C:

Now, anyone familiar with System Imaging and Restores has probably had to use some 3rd party software to do it (Ghost, Acronis, etc). Apparently Microsoft has stepped up to the plate.

How easy?
-- Prepare my slimming down the files you don't need on your system drive.
-- Click Start and type in "backup" and hit enter
-- Click on "CREATE A SYSTEM IMAGE" on the left-hand side.
-- Follow the Wizard, create the image and shut down the computer.
-- Remove your old C:
-- Put in your new C:
-- Boot to Windows 7 DVD
-- Go to Repair and select "Restore Image"
-- Eat popcorn, reboot and rejoice.

Doing this I went from a 90GB SSD to a 512GB SSD (which is awesome because you can extend the sys volume) so now SW:TOR will be running with SSD Goodness! =)

I haven't had very good luck with the system image portion. Selective file restores have worked fine.

What happened / what'd you do for a system image-based restore? I'm curious now as to whether or not I'm lucky or you're not.. =)

Had system image/backups going to secondary drive in the system and explicitly forced a backup. When I broke the OS like I was expecting I was, I tried booting from the Win7 DVD to restore from the image on the secondary drive. It said the system image couldn't be found despite the image directory being there and full of files. It did see the incrementals just fine.

I didn't do the backups, I simply shut down everything, saved it all.. then used the "Create System Image" utility.. not sure if that changes anything. I definitely trust you were doing it right, I'm kinda surprised.

Did you have something like your user folder on the secondary drive or anything system-related on it (kinda mucks with the imaging solution).

No redirected folders. Just a second drive that I had data on.

Just the same, my anecdotal experience doesn't nullify yours.

Naw I'm just curious - last thing I wanna do is direct people to give it a try if all I can run with is a 50-50 hit rate!! =)
