Display driver stopped responding and has recovered was created by [BBF]f1shman

I'm having a new issue that I would appreciate getting some help with.

OS: Windows 7 64bit (6.1 build 7601)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
Driver: 290.36 (beta) although I only upgraded because I had the same issues with the 285.64 version

During normal computer operation the driver will suddenly fail, causing a black screen for a few seconds. After a slight pause, it will recover and windows will kick up the notification that the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". Typically I will be browsing with Firefox when this happens, although it did occur a few times when I was playing Batman: Arkham City.

Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this?

Right now all I can say is that's one of the good and bad things about having Windows 7.

Good :: it can recover from when a game has an issue with the current video driver
Bad :: it's allowed game companies to be really lax with regards to video drivers.

As you know, nVidia puts out new drivers about three times a day, many are betas. Various game companies only go through on certain releases to certify that they don't have problems, etc. It's messy, it's frustrating and you're kinda seeing it.

So.. you can upgrade or downgrade the nVidia drivers.. but good luck all around =(

I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer, but at the same time I had a feeling it would be. It's a shame that companies can build cutting edge components and yet have such a hard time when it comes to supporting it.

You are right when it's really on nVidia.. but at the same time they're reacting to problems with various games.

I mean when you think about it.. if you released a videogame.. do you want to have to re-do all your QA Testing on it every week because a new driver comes out that makes significant changes to how it behaves? It's really not all that sustainable.

Guess that's one benefit of playing on Consoles... =/

i had this issue over and over when i first got my computer, its quite frustrating, the hard part is narrowing down the issue, because anything at all that interrupts your video drivers communication with windows 7 will give you this error. I did alot of research on the microsoft forums and saw alot of different peoples fixes, but what finally solved it for me was a tech came out replaced my cards and made sure they were firmly seated correctly, and i havnt had a problem since (warranty is a beautiful thing). Here is a forum i found of people discussing the issue, maybe it will help.

i had same problem as well before.

-hardware fix

make sure you check ur 3.3v on from ur motherboard.
if it is under 3.1v it could cuz that problem
-wiggle or reconnect 24pin and check ur Voltage. if u have 24pin extension get rid of it.

sli bridge might be faulty or sli connection might be.
use different sli bridge or change the sli port. (or one of ur GPU might be failing test them each)

these problems occur when you load your computer with so tests. so try to duplicate that way and see what happens

-software fix

not sure about ur MB. but realtak audio drivers cuz problems with some of the Nvidia drivers. If possible, remove realtak driver -> disable realtak on Bios -> uninstall Nvidia driver -> Nvidia Clean install (if not using 3D vision or Audio with GPU do not install)
