The game is an MMORPG, but with heavy adventure type controls, puzzles, and atmosphere. The theme of the game is extremely adultish, definitely not for kids or WoW players (I kid! I kid!), but well crafted. The atmosphere is astonishing and well done, from the music to the surroundings. Most of what I've played reminds me of a mix between Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and the Longest Journey all rolled into an MMORPG, but thats my impression from the "noob" areas.
The game plays a lot like SWTOR in the sense that every mission aka "quest" is done through voice acting and cut scenes, and is probably some of the best I've seen done in an MMORPG besides SWTOR.
There are no "classes" and "levels" to speak of, you can mix and match skills reminicent of SWG, with the exception that your skills are actually your weapons and I mean that literally. Like you can pick from shotguns, assualt rifles, swords, actual "magic", etc. etc and through your weapons you channel your magic called "anima" which gives your weapons a magical overtone and that in itself is pretty cool. When you "level" you gain skill points and much like SWG you can place these skill points anywhere you see fit, you could theoretically be a magic caster weidling an assual rifle or any of the million combinations you can think of. There are no cookie cutter builds like tanks, nukers, etc although with the right skill placement you could build yourself to assume those kinds of roles.
There is crafting and I'm still figuring it out so really can't comment on that with the exception that you can pretty much make yourself everything you need so money really doesn't play a heavy part of this game so far at my "level. There is no "armor" and clothes for the most part are just for looks, you gain health, armor aka "magic and phyiscal protection" through accessories like rings, amulets, bracelets, belts, etc, etc, each of giving you stats and each you can craft. You can't however use some of these things until your toon gains enough skill points aka "levels".
Overall I like this game, it still in beta so a lot of the tutorials aren't implemented yet, so your flying blind and the character customization is extremely limited in options as far as picking hair styles, size, faces, etc etc.
If you get the beta invite defintiely give it a shot and I will honestly say that some of the missions are disturbing in a Silent Hill type fashion, so play the game in a well lit area ;-)
It is a MMORPG and if you get an invite let me know and I'll hook up with you, granted if I'm not running thumper missions with paco in Firefall!
