One of the most addicting browser-based games I've ever played is Astro Empires. Although it lacks in development, its 24/7 real-time strategy gets the best of me. It's free to play with only minor limitations that won't ruin the game for you and an upgrade for a year is not too costly. To give you a rundown, it works like this:

Players control astros on which they can produce fleet and credits through economy. Once a fleet is built up, a player can begin to obtain credits by attacking other players' fleets and astros. Thus you can accumulate more credits and bank them into fleet. I think player ranking is largely based on fleet size and economy. It's pretty much a strategy game of economy and your fleet is the stock market. You'll either invest wisely or it'll get eaten by other people.

Bases have certain base stats you should know about: Contruction, Production, Energy, Defenses, Research.

Construction will decrease time taken to build things on your astro.

Production will decrease time taken to build fleet.

Energy is a requirement for building structures.

Defenses will protect your bases from attack.

Research is needed to build higher level structures and fleet.

The button "Tables" at the top will show you what's required to build what. You should aim for getting Outpost Ships soon so you can build on more astros.

One more thing, the best astros are in first position (or on the left of the region view) and are either Rocky, Metallic, Craters, or Asteroids, for their high levels in Solar energy, fertility, area, and metal resources.
