You shouldn't be able to unless the server has been updated to 1.4.6.

When you start minecraft at the bottom left hand corner it should say what update you are running. I havent tried connecting since im still away from home however when they release new items you should not be able to connect in the case of 1.4.4 and 1.4.5 you could of ran either update because it was only bug fixes.
