I personally swear on a regular and dailly basisboth in RL and in the gaming world, but never in a chat log.

I look at it this way short and sweet
I swear like a druken sailor sometimes, you dont like my swearing you got two choices to make and they are; speak up or ignore it. If you speak up i will do my absolute best to try and accomidate your wishes however i cant say for certain that something wont slip out.

Ive heard people swear in TS that you would never expect to hear swear in TS and when they used these so - called swear words they were used in a manner of no disrespect or hatefull meaning.

BAHAHAAAA, Paco and Dak both get +1's

There HAS to be a better way to accommodate everyone. Anyone have a suggestion for a new kind of rule, regulation, organization, or anything that could help everyone be more comfortable in TS? Such as...

-Separate TS channels that are "Mature" channels. (I know we tried this before. Why didn't it work out? Did it segregate people too much? I imagine it could do that and it isn't a strong solution.)

-(Person by Person basis) No swearing in TS if someone asks, or if a recruit or guest is in. (I think this would be best. I don't think we need a rule, or to get rid of the rule. As long as everyone understands that they need to be aware of who is in TS, and always be respectful of those that don't appreciate certain kinds of language. This is the ethical way of language in everyday life, why not apply it to TS?)

-A non-tolerance jar. Every time someone is incapable of tolerating someones else's language (as long as it's not harmful), they have to put a dollar in a jar. :) hee hee (just a little joke to remind a few people that there are multiple perspectives to right and wrong)

Let's stay constructive and see if someone out there has a good idea.

I would vote for this as a logical way of doing things.

Additionally, I'd also suggest a "kids table". A seperate channel in TS for members that are underage. Give them their own place to hang out where they are protected from the colorful language often exhibited by the more mature crowd.

This may be an effective way to better police what is heard by the jr members.

As for us adults, Puma's suggestion above is a plus for me.

I would agree with Puma be aware of who is in TS. if its someone you dont know very well then do the respectful thing and not swear or use colorful language until both members get to learn and know more about each other.

and for the underage members yes it would seem easy to stick them in their own channel and corner however its not respectful in my opinion. because someone somewhere would make this remark "OH, look at all the little kiddies playing by themselves in the kiddies corner channel." <-not very respectful (even though it might be funny to the person saying/hearing it, its not funny)

most of us know who the underage members are so we could act like upstanding mature, curtisious, teaching adults that we are and not swear in front of them, after all would you personally go swearing in front of your own children, and expect them not to use the same language that you use?

I see it this way and it is very simple, we do not make the clan look bad by cursing in TS no one besides us hears it. There is no one breaking the rules as the swearing isn't excessive accept to a very select few people, After reading this post I was taken aback that a clan member would come in here and bitch on the forums instead of asking the people she was talking to perhaps calm it down. There is a level of disrespect here these few clan member should respect the rest of us and realize we are adults and will curse just as we respect them and calm it down when asked but to bring it to the forum is a sign of great immaturity. That being if you are not willing to ask people before running to mommy and daddy crying about how mean people are you should really consider that we are all real world people and different forms of communication are used in different parts of the world and accept that there will be people in life who think much differently then you do it is a live and let live world. OH and just in case some one is planning on getting on the cussing is bad naught naughty band wagon there have been several new member who have been very active and several old one that said the would leave before they had to be censored again. We are all adults we will talk like adults and have earned the right to use strong language if you can't deal with it no one forcing anyone to stay and listen.

If people want to leave because they can't swear if it is a rule in BBF, they should go now. It is a clan decision, and if they don't want to be a part of it then they don't have to be.

Currently, the rule is no swearing, although it hasn't been strictly enforced. We should either start enforcing it, or change the rule.

We had no swearing as a rule for years strictly enforced, and during those years we had the most activity. My vote is always to keep it as a rule, even though I see good points on both sides. Why? Because the majority of responsible, respectable leaders I've known in BBF and in real life, do not swear. It is a sign of ignorance or shows lack of vocabulary.

The clan goes downhill when we allow swearing. This has been my observation every time we make some rule to allow swearing. This is what happened when we tried the separate channels, and when we allowed it in TS just last year.

It is not my decision to make for the whole clan, but those are my thoughts on it.

Oh, and whoever is bringing up the younger members as an example. I don't think it's a good influence on them to swear infront of them, but mainly, I don't want to hear them swear. 16 year old members swearing in TS is the last thing I want to hear when I'm playing games.

[hr:kholky5n][/hr:kholky5n]
Now it usually comes down to allowing or not allowing in BBF, because you can't really draw a clear line. The decision to not allow swearing is usually also because swearing is more negative than positive for the clan.

A google search brought up some interesting information. Sure, this website takes it to the extreme and I'm the first to admit I do swear some, and have sworn on TS, but it makes a good point.

Anyone in the clan care to point out more positive aspects to swearing than the negatives listed below?

Here's a few positive things I can bring up for swearing:

- Games now include swearing, and it fits and seems appropriate
- Included in friendly Banter can be fun
- Release of restraint, relief of stress even?

We had a good discussion on TS about it, and although we didn't really come up with anything specific, we do agree there should be some restrictions....in that if someone is truly offended, there should be clear methods in place to help reduce particular language.

Any other good reasons?

Paco, I hate to say this but you seem to be contradicting yourself a lot here. Every other post is either yes you can, no you can't, or in certain situations you can.

Now regarding your quotes I can see the first one playing out to a tee, but the second quote is so ridicules its almost bogus and sounds like a 5th grader wrote.

Swearing Imposes a Personal Penalty
It gives a bad impression
- In some company yes it does give a bad impression that’s why we are saying to know who is in TS, don’t swear in front of recruits or guests, and to keep it to a minimum.
It makes you unpleasant to be with
- In a gaming situation I know you are joking and you don’t really F'ing hate me so no I don’t think you are unpleasant.
It endangers your relationships
- The only relationships being endangered here are those who get into TS and do not clarify their distaste for swearing.
It's a tool for whiners and complainers
- This is very true I tend to curse more while doing bad .
It reduces respect people have for you
- I respect every clan member curser or not you have my full attention and I will do anything you "ASK" me to do.
It shows you don't have control
- Control? or what? Anger, temper, my bladder?
It's a sign of a bad attitude
- I am one of the nicest people you will meet, ill bend over backwards for you ad give you the shirt off my back.
It discloses a lack of character
- Will someone please post their beliefs on my character?
It's immature
- This list is immature……
It reflects ignorance
- Do they know the definition of ignorance? "Ignorance is a state of being uninformed" Also should I add that calling some one ignorant is an insult much like the words this list is trying to prove as disrespectful?
It sets a bad example
- The age limit for BBF is 16 if we are setting a bad example or the 16 year olds joining the clan cannot be mature enough is the use of swear words maybe we should raise the age limit again.

Swearing is Bad for Society
It contributes to the decline of civility
- I think we have more to worry about then swear words.
It represents the dumbing down of America
- No, that would be the terrible school system we have in which students become introduced to most of the swear words.
It offends more people than you think
- Speak up people don’t hold your tongue!!!!
It makes others uncomfortable
- Speak up people don’t hold your tongue!!!!
It is disrespectful of others
- Speak up people don’t hold your tongue!!!!
It turns discussions into arguments
- Only if the discussion is whether or not swearing is acceptable
It can be a sign of hostility
-True but, we are not being hostile towards each other we are playing a "game" lighten up people.
It can lead to violence
- Yes it can last night I said a bad word to Kildar and he shot me in the head with his sniper tehehe

Swearing corrupts the English language
It's abrasive, lazy language
- Doesn’t most of the world think the American language is lazy anyways?
It doesn't communicate clearly
- I think GTFO clarifies how I'm feeling at times.
It neglects more meaningful words
- I Love You
It lacks imagination
- Pretty sure most swear words came from other words or are a combination of multiple words pretty ingenious to me.
It has lost its effectiveness
- So the list proclaiming swearing is bad is now saying that at one point swearing was effective at something?

Now by no means am I saying I'm going to curse no matter what because I will do as the general census sees fit but, even though many people have said we should vote to make a general census I have yet to see a swearing poll.

Maybe the brass should make a poll along these lines.

Q. Should BBF change our Team Speak policy on swearing?

A1. "No"
A2. "Yes"

If no then maybe we should all shut up and get back to gaming and maybe start enforcing the rule.

If yes then we as a clan in the private section can propose a rule clearly stating different situations like when recruits or guests are in the server, when someone like Emma has an issue with swearing, during scrims or practices, when members become hostile or have bad attitudes and we also need to discuss repercussions of specific actions.

Their needs to be a happy medium between all members.
