Re: PC Upgrade Advice for BLACK OPS was created by [BBF]Puma

Hey everyone,

I do just fine playing MW2 on minimal settings, but I'm a little tired of it. I would love to upgrade my PC for Black Ops, only problem is... I'm not sure what I should upgrade. Most likely my video card is what brings me down the most, and the only problem with that, is I don't have much power and would probably mess up an upgraded card if I got one. here are my specs...

2 Quad cores running at 2.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
64 BIT

Geforce 8500 GT (integrated)
2303 MB of total available graphics memory
512 MB Dedicated

Anyone got any advice for me?
Thank you =)

Hey mate. Are you sure it's 2 quad cores? That means you run a server board... which I somehow doubt.

What are the CPU's? 2.4GHz doesn't help because there are all kinds of factors which come into play. If you are running a server board, are they Opterons or Xeons? If not, what are they?

What speed is your RAM, and is it DDR2 or DDR3?

Yes, the 8500GT is very outdated, I initially had a POS 4350 1GB (not a gaming card) which cost me $45, and it performs better than that.

What brand is your power supply and what is the output?

Finally, what is the budget for this upgrade, and did you build this computer or have you ever tinkered inside one?

Download Piriform Speccy.
It will make it a lot easier for you and other people to understand.

Install, run, take a screen shot and post it.

What brand and wattage is your power supply?
My tag is [BBF]Chad in COD4.

From what we discussed a month or 2 ago, I did some research on your HP model and couldn't find any information on your power supply through HP, only through owner comments and if I remember correctly is was 400 watt or less.
You most likely have to purchase a higher watt power supply to power the graphics card you want.
Do you have a preferred brand and manufacturer? (ATI,nVidia/BFG,XFX,PNY)

Oddball, I appreciate that you are willing to help me but I'm really not comfortable conversing with you given our history, in fact I'm not sure why you on our forums at all.
Thank you, but no thank you.

i would up the graphics card to a GTX460 - they are in the $200 range depending on overclock and memory.
it has great performance is a bit less pwoerhungry than other Nvidia cards. You probably don't want to get one of the factory overclocked cards as they need more power.

here are some power comparisons - read the rest of the review on how the cards stack up.

powersupply is a touchy thing, it may or may not be enough. I had a dell with a 235W PS and put in a ATI AIW 9800 (yes it was a while ago)....even though ATI specced a 400+W PS for that card. Never had an issue. - Now Dell did have that system with an option to put that card in it, I jsut purchased it separately as the Dell upgrade was way too much..... So not all power supplies are created equal, but it is somethign to check up on.

I was never asked not to post or be around the forums by any administration.
If you want to discuss that, pm me, for now back on topic.

The choice of ATI and nVidia will come down to your personal preference, I checked steams hardware survey
and of the people surveyed 59.11% use nvidia and 32.98% use ATI.

For manufacturer just ask around and see what other people have.
I personally prefer XFX but am using BFG atm. I will never purchase a PNY due to them not having
any sort of warranty on their products.

If you do choose to go nVidia, EVGA is your best option. For ATi, Sapphire or Asus are the best options.

You will definitely need to change out the PSU and GPU, but considering you're running 400MHz RAM, it might be best to do a complete upgrade.

Personally I'd do this right now (I'd go AMD because of the better price to performance ratio, but it's up to you):

i5 750/760 (if going Intel) OR Phenom II 955/965 (if going AMD)
P55 OR 890GX/FX mobo
4GB 1333 CL8 (Corsair or G.Skill)
GTX460 OR 5850
750W Corsair/Enermax/Seasonic/Antec PSU
CM Storm Scout/Lian Li K56/58/60/62
Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB or 1TB
