Hey summoners! Welcome to the second installment of my Top Fives. Today I will review the top five champion designs of the original 40 champions. Like my first article, I will make five categories and a top champ for each.
1. Storyline: So few are the players who take great interest in the storylines of champions. I'd have to say that many of these stories are intriguing and a refreshing outlook on the game. There is one champion I find to have a storyline far more intricate than the others'. His gameplay aspect and coolness factor usually take summoners immediately beyond his background. I'm sure many of you could tell me the sister of Kayle or the brother of Nasus or even the child born to gypsy parents. But can you tell me the man who was cursed eternally by Soraka?
Warwick
Warwick, the revered chemist of Zaun, master of Singed, and human-turned-werewolf Noxian pariah, comes as the champion with the best storyline. His lycan mishap is unlike any other werewolf tale out there. Warwick's story ties into many people and places, directly and indirectly, and gives definition to a large portion of characters, places, and events.
2. Art Design: League of Legends became such a hit largely due to its artistic savvy and originality. Some champions have badass detail like Mordekaiser. Others have impressive animations like Morgana. Then, of course, there are the cute irresistable yordles. Lastly, some champs have a great variety of skins and wonderful skin designs, whether made by or custom-made by fans. There is one champion that has all these elements.
Annie
No other champion has more in-depth artistic detail, a large skin selection, and an original champion design all rolled into one small adorably hellish package. This fiery demon-child, a favorite of many players, finds herself on top of all the artistry that the original game has to offer. Just look into her eyes and tell me she's not precious. Or a pyromaniac.
3. Gameplay: So far, I've discussed out-of-game categories. It is important to take into account all aspects of champion design. As for gameplay, this may have been the toughest choice. Each champion has a unique play style and strategy. One of the most fun ways to play is unseen. Who in the world would not want to be invisible? But of the four stealth champions, one is a whole bunch more fun than the others.
Shaco
Every kid's nightmare is now every kid's favorite champion. The demon jester has more than just a creepy smile and two needlessly large shivs. His passive slow, boxed minions that induce fear, and a flash that might as well be spammable, are the dread of any player. His unique playstyle makes him one of the most enjoyable champions to play and truly defines the assassin class. Not to mention his creepy laughs.
4. Originality: This category is even tougher to judge because it combines elements of the previous three. I looked for a champion with an original storyline, art, and gameplay context and came out with one hell, literally, of a champion. This champion, baptized in the Howling Swamp of Valoran, now not only rules that Swamp but also this category. I hereby crown...
Karthus
To me, Karthus is a relic of League of Legends. If, for some reason, Riot were to die of drought, Karthus would live on eternally. Every aspect of this champion makes him a paragon of design.
5. Overall: One champion has to take the cake. One champion is the symbol, a mascot of League. His cutsie design yet unique gameplay has made him a favorite choice of many summoners, both casual and competitive.
Teemo
Need I say more? Teemo is probably the king of LoL fandom. Never too trite or commonplace, Teemo is the champion everyone adores. What team isn't complete without a little yordle running around the map planting explosive mushrooms? Remember, there's no "I" in Teemo!
