I imagine it could have been either way, considering the maps are mirrored. But I guess at this point it's kind of set in stone. And if it were ever to start to change, it would just turn in to a 50/50 thing that either top or bot would be 1v2. Guess top lane being solo is just how it happened to end up.

Lotta good points made, but the reason you usually want top to be solo is because with 2 bot lane you get better control and easier wardage over dragon. Which can be very important early game. Back in beta the meta was 1 top, 1 bot and 3 mid. Never really knew why.
